The Beer Ain't Cuttin' It!

HELP! I need a way to rid myself of these damn slugs! Now I found them in my strawberry patch! I tried the beer. A few took the bait but I'm still finding them (tiny ones) near my strawberries, red potatoes and romaine lettuce. What can I do? I'll have to consult Master Gardner Google. He'll know what to do.

Phil's Accident

When Phil went to go get the windows from the Re-Store he accidently made the wrong move and the window he was carrying slipped and landed on his left foot! Ouch! He thought his toes were broken because he couldn't feel them. He got back home and removed his shoes & socks to reveal the pic below (double OUCH!) I got squeamish when I looked at it so I had to look away. I still get squeamish looking at the pic so I'll be moving onto the next post!

Temperature

I always weigh myself each morning (I know BAD habit!) Now when I go inside the greenhouse I always check the temperature. Okay, so I'm obsessive and a control freak! Anyway, today's temperature read 54 degrees. This is NOT a good temp for my hot house veggies & fruits. Hopefully tomorrow brings warmer weather.

NEW Windows!

Phil went to the Re-Store today to purchase the windows for the greenhouse! It's SO exciting when I see materials coming in, it only means we're one step closer to have a warmer, more secure greenhouse that's virtually slug...I mean, pest-free!

About Me and Gardening

It's me! In my favorite room, the greenhouse! This is my sanctuary, my church, where I go to be one with God and all He has given to me and my family. I acquire good ideas, plans and thoughts when I come here. I sing here, design here and if I could I would sleep here. I keep it clear from debris, weeds and unwanted pests. I can breath here (but not let my hair down because it frizzes up from the high humidity!) If I could garden for a living I truly believe it would be my dream job!

Journal Entry#5 (Week#4)-The Doors

We went to the Re-Store on Saturday (05/16/13) and found two doors to place on both ends of our greenhouse. We've decided to build a glass and wood greenhouse for temperature control in the winter months. Although it doesn't get extreme here in the northwest during winter, we'd like to keep it nice and balmy for our hot house produce like tomatoes, peppers, lemons and sweet potatoes.

We also saw large double-pane windows that open up by cranking a handle that were ridiculously cheap. We could by all of the windows for our greenhouse for under $200. We're planning on sealing the wood to prevent rotting and we're gonna use a clear, wavy durable roofing material to let the sun shine pour in overhead.

It's so exciting just thinking about going to a warm and sunny place in the dead of a northwest winter (which is usually pretty gray, brown and gloomy. We have lots of plans (and DREAMS) ahead so we'll keep ya posted!

Aren't these NICE?! Only $11 for BOTH! We'll paint the white one chocolate to match the other one.

Phil tilled the area beside the greenhouse (on the outside) because this is where we'll plant our red potatoes and pumpkins. Our sweet potatoes will be grown inside due to the fact that they require high temperatures to grow and thrive.

The red potatoes have been planted so we'll see if we did it correctly.

Journal Entry#5- (Week#4) Slugs Found! Ugh!

Slugs attacking my greens! Ugh!

I went to our greenhouse and discovered slugs on my romaine and red leaf lettuce (my friend Karen gave me.) I told Karen about it and she suggested placing bowls of beer where I discovered the slugs and they'll crawl into the beer bowls and die. I loved this idea so I did it myself. Below are the results:
